Temporary homes for pigmy hedgehogs:

We want to create the right good conditions for hedgies to make them feel good and comfortable until they find a responsible owner.

All those who are willing to create a temporary home, please contact Klaudia:
E-mail: hodowla.olimp@yahoo.com
Mobile: +48 663 985 430

Volunteering involves:

  • To create the conditions for proper care (according to our standards) over the Pygmy hedgehog. Care usually takes 14-30 days.
  • Follow the advice of a vet.
  • Make a photo and description of the hedgehog so we can put information on websites and Facebook to find the loving home.
  • Providing information about the animal admitted to temporary care to those who wish to adopt it.
  • Issue an animal to a person and sign an adoption agreement with her. The Association will prepare the agreement.

We encourage you to register your hedgehogs and litters. Registration will help us avoid accidental inbreeding (too close kinship), as well as better understand hereditary characteristics and health trends associated with the inheritance of pigmy hedgehogs.

By registering your hedgehogor the whole litter you will get an ID number (PRJH) and a certificate in electronic form.

As a member of our association you will receive a certificate in paper form (you just need to cover the cost of print – 3 zł / pcs and the cost of shipping).

Objectives of registration of the african pigmy hedgehogs:

1. Preserve the genetic pool of the species, strengthen the beneficial hereditary characteristics.
2. Enhance knowledge of hereditary characteristics to eliminate those features that have a negative impact on the longevity of hedgehogs and their health.
3. The combination of owners and breeders hires each other, to strengthen the barbed business community. 🙂

This short story is about tiny boy named Dodo. We repurchase the boy – with the help of Internet Users – from the irresponsible owner.
The hedgie was kept on bentonite.

Dodo had about a year when he came to us. He’s from Berlin kennel.  He loves wet food and insects. Dodo is nice and open for new people, but he does not like it when he’s waken up. He likes running in a spinning wheel. He isn’t afraid of domestic animals – including cats. Certainly anyone who once held him in his arms will love him.

Dodo is already registered in PRJH, we also set up his health book and dewormed him (prophylactically).

Thank God we found a new carer for Dodo. Mrs. Natalia was very eager to meet with our representative to get all the information she needed. She is a nice and responsible woman who with a heart came up to this frightened pet. We visited  Natalia to determine if the conditions that she created the hedgehog would be suitable for him. After the formalities and the completion of the quarantine, Dodo now live with Natalia, who has been in contact with us so far. 🙂

Dear Readers! Thanks for the help of Internet users of the purchase, food and medical help for the hedgehogs. We collected 245 zł! Thank you, thank you, thank you! 🙂

He was a shy little boy; around 2 years old. Came to us from Lubin (woj. śląskie).

Our Association covered the cost of medical treatment of veterinary visits. He was prophylactically dewormed, which has been recorded in the health book that we have bought him.

This lovely hedgie loves burying and rattling in blankets. Unfortunately he doesn’t feel comfortable while being around other animals (dogs, cats, guinea pigs).

From the previous owner he received his bowls, blankets and wooden bridge.

We wish all the best to this sweety!

1Hedges actually can do magic.

Their spines, friendly temperament and shiny gorgeous eyes attract attention all over the world.

Why Hedgehogs are so special:

  • Every hedgehog is different- they have different characters
  • They easily adapt to new situation
  • They don’t need any vaccinations or sterilisation
  • Hypoallergenic
  • They don’t require special treatment

In contrast to hamsters, guinea pigs and other small rodents, hedgehogs do not leave bad smell. They live much longer than rodents, some of them can live up to 8 years, but usually they live around 5 years. Hedges are small, their average weight is somewhere between 350-450 grams.

Every hedgehog has its own personality. They are surprisingly intelligent, a smart hedge can even give a paw! Pygmy hedgehogs should be fed  on the high quality cat food and with the blend of cooked chicken/ turkey meat, fruits, vegetables and insects.

    Terrarium

The most appropriate are wooden terrariums with minimum external dimensions 90 x 45 cm, glass terrariums are also working great. Cages aren’t recommended because hedge can hurt itself by trying to climb on the bars of the cage.

Hedgehogs must be put in the place where temperatures are between 22-26 C. If the temperature is lower, we have to heat up the terrarium by using a special cable, heating mat or bulb.

Hedgehogs of the opposite sex should be hold individually. A hedge should have a house inside the terrarium-made of wood, plastic or carton box. Necessary equipment for your hedgehog is also spinning wheel. Remember that it is highly recommended to let the hedgehog run free around the room, especially on evenings.

Do not keep your hedge close to the fire (high temperature, fire, smoke), windows (draught, direct sun rays), front door (temperature fluctuations), or in places with big noise.

    Feeding

Hedgehogs need 1-3 spoons of food daily. The meal should contain from 70 to 100 kcal. Beware of obesity, which is very common at hedges. If your hedgehog is overweight, you should reduce the amount of food. If the food is too cold, your pet can get diarrhea. Except dry food, you have to ensure some insects, cooked meat (without salt), fruit and vegetables (raw, cooked, but not dried).

Do not feed your hedge with: nuts, avocado, onion, garlic, raw carrot, celery, grapes, raisins, dried fruits, chocolate, raw meat and eggs, citrus fruits. Milk products, fish, pork and beef.

Insects should be bought in pet shop, not caught in nature!

    Health

It is necessary for hedgies to have proper temperature. Too high or too low temperature can even lead to hedgehog’s death. Hedgies are mostly active at night. If they feel endangered, they roll up themselves into a ball. It is easy to distinguish hedgehogs sex. Boys have always their reproduction organs on the center of the tummy, and it is looking like a navel. Girls are having their organs much closer to the tail. Licking needles is totally normal. Between 4’th and 6’th week of their lives (the same happens also between 9’th and 12’th) hedges are changing their needles, which lasts up to few weeks. The weight fluctuates from 250 to 650g. There are three lines of sizes:

    -Mini (about 300g)

    -Midi (up to 500g)

    -Jumbo (over 500g)

It is very important to observe the hedgehogs nails, if they are too long, you have to shorten them.

Mostly common health issues: Loosing needles, scaly skin, damaged ears, overheat, hibernation, stress, overweight.

    Breeding

Every breeder should know how to care of his animals, understand their needs and behavior . Please, consider, if you can ensure well vet care, consider also of you can stand the fact that many female hedges are killing their cubs. In any conditions you can’t be a breeder of you are thinking only about benefits! Female pregnancy lasts about 35 days, she breeds 2-6 cubs, they are bald, deaf and blind. During first 6 weeks they are fed by their mother
